Description

A simple and rustic loaf using basic ingredients, perfect for pairing with soups and stews.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1.75 cups cold buttermilk
  • 1 tbsp melted butter (optional, for brushing)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Lightly flour a baking sheet or cast-iron skillet.
  2. Mix dry ingredients: Whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl.
  3. Create a well in the center: Make a small well in the dry mixture.
  4. Add buttermilk: Pour the cold buttermilk into the well created.
  5. Mix the dough: Stir gently until a shaggy dough forms; don’t overmix.
  6. Shape the dough: Turn it out onto a floured surface and shape it into a round loaf about 1.5 inches thick.
  7. Transfer to the baking pan: Move the loaf onto the prepared baking sheet, cut a deep ½-inch

Notes

Use fresh ingredients and avoid overworking the dough to achieve a soft texture.
