Description
A simple yet delicious soda bread combining sharp white cheddar cheese and fresh chives, perfect as a side or standalone snack.

- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 1.5 cups sharp white cheddar cheese, freshly shredded
- 0.25 cup fresh chives, finely chopped
- 1.75 cups cold buttermilk
- 2 tbsp melted butter (for brushing)
- Pinch of garlic powder (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or grease a cast-iron skillet.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
- Stir in the freshly shredded sharp white cheddar cheese and finely chopped chives.
- Create a well in the center of the flour mixture and pour in the cold buttermilk. Stir gently until a shaggy dough forms.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently shape it into a round loaf.
- Use a sharp knife to score a deep ‘X’ across the top of the dough.
- Place the loaf in the preheated oven and bake for 30–35 minutes.
- Cool the bread on a wire rack for at least 15 minutes before slicing.
Notes
For best results, use fresh ingredients and avoid overmixing the dough.
