Description

A simple yet delicious soda bread combining sharp white cheddar cheese and fresh chives, perfect as a side or standalone snack.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1.5 cups sharp white cheddar cheese, freshly shredded
  • 0.25 cup fresh chives, finely chopped
  • 1.75 cups cold buttermilk
  • 2 tbsp melted butter (for brushing)
  • Pinch of garlic powder (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or grease a cast-iron skillet.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
  4. Stir in the freshly shredded sharp white cheddar cheese and finely chopped chives.
  5. Create a well in the center of the flour mixture and pour in the cold buttermilk. Stir gently until a shaggy dough forms.
  6. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently shape it into a round loaf.
  7. Use a sharp knife to score a deep ‘X’ across the top of the dough.
  8. Place the loaf in the preheated oven and bake for 30–35 minutes.
  9. Cool the bread on a wire rack for at least 15 minutes before slicing.

Notes

For best results, use fresh ingredients and avoid overmixing the dough.
