Description
The best Philly Cheesesteaks are all about tender shaved beef, melty cheese, and perfectly toasted rolls. With these local secrets, you’ll learn how to master the authentic Philly flavor — gooey, juicy, and utterly irresistible!
Ingredients
1 lb ribeye steak, thinly sliced (partially frozen for easy slicing)
2 tbsp vegetable oil or butter
1 small onion, thinly sliced
1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced (optional, but locals debate it!)
8 oz white American cheese or provolone
4 hoagie rolls or Amoroso-style rolls
Salt and pepper to taste
Optional: Cheez Whiz for the classic Philly touch
Instructions
1. Freeze ribeye for 30 minutes to make slicing easier. Slice thinly against the grain.
2. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large skillet or griddle over medium-high heat.
3. Add onions (and peppers if using) and sauté for 5 minutes until softened and slightly caramelized. Remove and set aside.
4. Add remaining oil, then add sliced beef in a single layer.
5. Cook undisturbed for 1–2 minutes, then stir and cook until browned. Season with salt and pepper.
6. Return onions (and peppers) to the skillet, mixing everything together.
7. Lay slices of cheese over the beef mixture. Let it melt slightly, then fold together until cheesy and gooey.
8. Split the hoagie rolls, toast lightly, and fill generously with the hot beef and cheese mixture.
9. Serve immediately — no forks, no knives, just pure Philly perfection!
Notes
Locals swear by thinly shaved ribeye for authentic texture and flavor.
Cheez Whiz is iconic — but white American or provolone are acceptable Philly favorites.
Never overload with toppings — it’s all about meat, cheese, and bread harmony.
Amoroso rolls are the gold standard, but any soft Italian roll works.
Add hot cherry peppers or sautéed mushrooms for regional variations!
